After Shanghai’s opening as a commercial port, American missionaries aggrandized their land in the Hongkou (Hongkew) area to expand their power. After causing the fait accompli, Shanghai Daotai was required to delineate the area as the American settlement. In 1863, the American area was merged with the British as the Shanghai International Settlement. in June 1893, Shanghai Municipal Council and Shanghai Daotai demarcated the new boundary of the American Concession and established a boundary marker. This monument may be a relic left from that time.
